Day 17 – A song that you hear often on the radio
Give Me Everything, Pitbull

Reach for the stars / And if you don’t grab em, at least you’re on top of the world

A song I hear often on the radio; I don’t love it but I don’t hate it. It’s not a song I would normally listen to, but if there’s nothing better playing on my other stations, then I can settle for this. I can stand this a lot more than Party Rock Anthem.

Day 16 – A song that you used to love but now hate
Grenade, Bruno Mars

I’d catch a grenade for ya / Throw my hand on a blade for ya / I’d jump in front of a train for ya

Actually, this applies to all of his songs that I’ve listened to: Grenade, Just the Way You Are, Talking to the Moon, Today My Life Begins. My love for them has never gone past two weeks or so. I don’t know, I guess his lyrics are nice and so is his voice, but it’s a but saccharine. In really small doses, t’s nice, but take too much and it becomes sickening. Like Extraordinary Desserts: amazing and exotic, but try and eat the whole thing and you end up being sick to your stomach with sugar and developing at sugar headache.

Day 15 – A song that describes you
Boku wa Kuma, Utada Hikaru

This was definitely a challenge. It took forever to find a decent song that I think fits me, but I think I found it. Boku wa kuma. I am a bear. Guess it pays homage to my nickname, and that inner kid in me, since this song was written specifically for a kid’s TV show in Japan. Yep.

Day 14 – A song that no one would expect you to love
Top of the World, The Cateracs feat, Dev

Im your bonnie, you’re my clyde / I’ll be your “ride or die” / Tell me where you want to go

This was definitely one of my favorite songs last summer. I love electro-hop with their fusion of synthesizers and hard-hitting bass, though sadly it’s rather difficult to find this kind of music. Actually, I really love party music with good beats and bass down low, which is ironic because I don’t actually party or anything like that. Although I do want to go to a club just for the experience (it’s on my bucket list). But it’s still good to listen to, especially with the bass turned up in the car or in live performances.

This is my favorite song from them—it has good beats and the lyrics are definitely a LOT less vulgar and sexual than their other songs. Or maybe because it features Dev; I really like her voice and prefer to listen to her over the Cataracs themselves. I really want to see the Cataracs perform at SD, but I have a feeling that none of my friends are gonna want to see them. Poops.

Baby (Acoustic)

Day 13 – A song that is a guilty pleasure
Baby (Acoustic), Justin Bieber

Said ‘there’s another,’ and looked right in my eyes / My first love broke my heart for the first time / And I was like baby, baby, baby, oh

Shameful guilty confession #2: I love this song, well mostly just the acoustic version. Justin Bieber is actually quite a good singer/guitarist. But. I still can’t stand his voice. It is way too high-pitched even for his age. Like maybe if he were to mature a little more and re-record this song, I will definitely love it. But for now, it will stay on my secretly-played list. I can’t believe that Cody Simpson is three years younger and has a deeper voice than Bieber. I can’t believe that he’s exactly two years younger than me. I still can’t believe we share the same birthday along with Kesha. With Kesha. The horror. The things she probably does on her birthday.

Day 12 – A song from a band you hate
Run Devil Run, SNSD

I’m not a big fan of super-huge K-pop group bands, as in way too many members. What is the point of having so many people in a group? Not only that, I had a friend in high school who was overly obsessive with SNSD. And then my roommate last year was too. He had posters of them and 2PM on the wall. There was in particular this one picture of a printed blow-up of Jessica. I had to wake up to her staring at me. Every. Single. Morning. She was directly across from me on the opposite wall of my bed. Even after seeing their pictures for a whole year, I still cannot tell them apart.

Gravity's Hold (New Version)

Day 11 – A song from your favorite band
Gravity’s Hold, Tim Be Told

He said its fun for the moment / ‘When I grow up, I’ll give it up later on’ / One day he’ll snap back to sober reality / Leave it to fate, look it’s too late and he’s gone

Tim Be Told. One of my favorite artists out there. From their music and lyrics about religious and societal issues to the fact that they produce and write everything. I guess it’s also cause I can relate to most of their songs. Plus, every song is written as if it were a story, beginning with a despondent character with problems that people can relate to, and ending with a resolution of hope and peace. I love songs that are subtly Christian. I don’t know I just do. Maybe because it’s not too in-your-face when you just want background music, yet it can still be deeply personal when you do choose to pay attention to . This band reminds me of this quote:

“To be honest, I don’t want to create an album that pleases every Christian out there & is for the Christian masses. I want to write heaven songs that connect with people everywhere, not just those who are in church already, but those who are maybe searching.”
—Joel Houston

Tim Be Told demonstrates this wonderfully. But more importantly, I think they show us what it means to really be human, whether or not there’s a spiritual connotation attached to it. Gahh I really want to see them on 9/9 when they come to the Bay Area to perform!

Bluebird Story with Jumelles

Day 10 – A song that makes you fall asleep
Bluebird Story, DJ Okawari

This doesn’t make me fall asleep per se, but it was on my playlist of songs that help me fall asleep. DJ Okawari has a nice chill-hop style that combines piano and beats with a Japanese influence in style.

Girls On the Dance Floor (feat. 24/8)

Day 09—A song that you can dance to
Girls on the Dance Floor, Far East Movement

Swag on tight with a gangsta lead / Everybody knows just who I are

Honestly, I fail at dancing. But two items on my bucket list are: to learn hip hop and to take a tango dance lesson. Seriously, I think tango is legit and very fun to do with a partner. Anyway, over the events in college, I’ve learned that I am only willing to dance and move if a song has bass. Like lots of heavy thumping bass. What can I say, I love bass and feeling the place vibrate from sound waves. Like at Sungod when I was basically in front of the tower of stereos, annoying at first, but I got used to it. Yup, I will only dance and move to bass.

Please Don't Go

Day 08—A Song You Know All the Words to
Please Don’t Go, Mike Posner

Just run away, from these lies / Back to yesterday, safe tonight

I discovered Mike Posner Fall Quarter after going to a Kun-Fusion workshop and we danced to Posner’s cover of Evil Woman. It was really catchy so I decided to look him up and download his entire album. One of my favorite albums. I love the mix of of smooth R&B with the edgier electro beats and bass. Yup, he was definitely the reason I wanted to go to Sungod (I was hella hoping ASUCSD would try to hire him). He’s kind of a douchebag in real life, but still really talented, and I still love his songs.
